My early years were mostly spent in the Midlands, and content with my life, I have lived for 18 years in Peggs Green, Coleorton, Leicestershire.
A researcher/questioner by nature, with a bent for science, I have trained as an instructor and coach in equitation and swimming, I have earned an honours degree in chemistry from the Open University, continued to gain a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and taught science at secondary level. My current work, equine podiatry, involves trimming and caring for horses’ feet using a functional anatomical approach which has a principled scientific underpinning.
I was jolted by the events of 2020. Our democracy, so I thought, became totalitarian overnight. How did the British character get upended in 2020? What is democracy?
Democracy: etymology of the word – demos is people, kratein is power. Whether in the hand of one or many, power can be used for good or for ill. There needs to be checks and balances within the system.
Last year I became a parish councillor for Coleorton Parish where I live. Navigating that role, appreciating the different responsibilities of councillors and officers; the rules and protocols, which when applied appropriately, provide mechanisms for getting things done within the community in a fair and just way. Checks and balances should be monitored by the councillors, officers and by the parishioners themselves to keep it so.
I believe the role of governance is to facilitate people to lead their lives in peace. Humanity is endowed with inalienable rights which should be protected. It seems that today governments are wanting to control every aspect of our lives and they are working beyond their jurisdiction in this regard. Government should be made to attend to its proper functions and step out of areas in which it has little business.
There is much discord within our country and without. With the power of creative reason humanity can associate harmoniously with our world, using the natural laws, for the benefit of all. Let’s work to make a beautiful symphony.
